CEO

Ian Quirk is the Founder and CEO of Active Needle Technology Ltd.

Ian has more than 20 years of experience in the medical device industry having led multiple successful market approvals in US and EU. He also holds the position of a Non-Executive Director at Lightpoint Medical Ltd. Before joining Lightpoint, Ian was the Worldwide Director of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs at Ranier Technology. Previously, he held clinical, regulatory and quality director roles at Cardiak and Lombard Medical. Ian holds an MSc in Evidence-Based Medicine from Oxford University, a BSc (Honours) in Chemistry from Kingston University.

Senior Technical Officer

Muhammad Sadiq is the Founder and Senior Technical Officer of Active Needle Technology Ltd.

Dr Muhammad Sadiq is an RSE Enterprise Fellow and the inventor of the Active Needle technology that he developed during his PhD research. Muhammad is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with more than 10 years of experience in medical device product development. Over the years, Muhammad has developed expertise in the field of ultrasound, with a focus on ultrasound devices and piezoelectric materials. Previously, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Dundee. Muhammad holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and a BEng (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dundee.

Muhammad Sadiq, PhD

Andrea is a director of Oxford Technology Management and representative of the OT(S)EIS fund.

He has been working with early stage technology companies from 1993. He graduated from the Delft University of Technology with an MSc in Industrial Design Engineering, and went on for a further graduate study in Innovation and Creativity at the State University College of New York at Buffalo. He has a strong and varied background in technology both promoting technologies for sale, and identifying new technologies to invest in. He also has an entrepreneurial streak – in 2009 he co-founded CleanSteel Ltd, a company that developed a new technique for recycling waste products from the tyre industry and realised he was better at helping others than doing it himself.

Dr. Mike Irvine brings more than 30 years of healthcare product development experience to Active Needle Technology.

Mike has worked with the founding team prior to, during and since the organisation’s inception. Mike has prior experience of image-guided medical procedures using ultrasound and other imaging modalities. He has been instrumental in bringing a wide range of novel imaging, therapeutic, diagnostic and sensing technologies / products to worldwide markets. This has been done in a variety of medical device organisations ranging from startups to multinationals. Mike’s product development activities are complemented by his experience of business development and alliance management. Mike holds a PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of Manchester and is a Chartered Chemist, member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Finance Director

Alistair Williams is a Chartered Accountant and Finance Director with experience in both early-stage entrepreneurial companies as well as larger multi-national businesses, including corporate finance and operational roles in healthcare at SmithKline Beecham. He is an active angel investor with a keen interest in life science projects. He invested in Active Needle early in the company’s development and has made a number of follow-on investments. He has been a Director since August 2018 and leads the company’s corporate finance and financial planning activities.

Alistair Williams

Chairman

Bill is an internationally experienced medical devices executive and entrepreneur who has held a number of global leadership positions with large Multinational medical device companies, including Stryker, Smith & Nephew, Angiodynamics, and Orthovita and is currently CEO of SurgaColl Technologies. In addition, he has been instrumental in the successful transition of three small Medical Device companies to exit. Bill is a visiting lecturer in Medtech startup ‘route to market strategy’ at the University of Cambridge MBE programme and a mentor at the Judge Business School in Cambridge.

Angie Glover is a QA/RA professional with over 20 years experience in medical devices. Angie is responsible for medical quality and regulatory systems at Active Needle and has been in post since summer 2019. She has an academic interest in psychology, with both bachelors and masters degrees in the subject, gained from the Open University.

Scientist

Kate Shenton is a life scientist specialising in in-vivo study support. She has 15 years’ experience supporting studies at AstraZeneca across multiple species and research areas including toxicology, reproductive toxicology, cardiovascular and oncology.

Kate has a BSc (Hons) Biology from The University of Manchester. She is passionate about the welfare of animals in research and the people working with them. At AstraZeneca she held the position of Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer and in this role presented to UK and global audiences.

Sales and Marketing

Stuart is a business graduate with 20 years in international medical device sales and marketing. He has led commercial teams within interventional spine, neuro, orthopaedics, GI endoscopy, and plastics across the USA and EMEA. As Sales and Marketing Director, with significant experience in both direct and third-party sales, Stuart’s teams have generated several millions of dollars of profitable sales for Stryker, Orthovita, Advanced Biologics, Ranier, and 3D Matrix Medical.

With expertise in launching and commercialising novel implantable biomaterials, haemostats, spinal implants, and interventional technologies, Stuart began collaborating with Active Needle, having recently developed his own medical device consultancy in Cambridge, supporting and advising the commercial functions of both start-up and established healthcare technology businesses.
